Apple on Friday debuted the iPhone 2.1 firmware update, designed to fix a number of issues that iPhone users have complained about.
According to Apple's Website, the iPhone 2.1 update should increase battery life, decrease the number of dropped calls, reduce backup time, and improve email reliability and retrieve email from POP and Exchange accounts.
The iPhone 2.1 software update also improves the installation speed of third party applications, and fixes bugs and crashes caused by having lots of third party apps on the iPhone.
Additionally, the iPhone 2.1 software update includes "improved accuracy of the 3G signal strength display," according to the Apple Website.
The iPhone 2.1 software update also adds new features to the iPhone, such as "Genius" playlist creation, additional text message alerts, and the option to wipe data after ten failed passcode attempts.
iPhone users can get the 2.1 software update by syncing their iPhones with iTunes, or by downloading the update directly from the Apple Website. Users can also purchase the iPhone 2.1 software update for their iPod touch devices for $9.95 through the Apple App Store. For iPod touch users that have already purchased the iPhone 2.0 software update, the iPhone 2.1 software update is free.
The iPhone 2.1 software update patches six potential security flaws in the iPhone. The previous software update, 2.01, had a security vulnerability that allowed it to be hacked even if the phone was locked.
