1.5B iPhone App downloads in first year

Apple Inc.'s iPhone App Store has picked up speed, marking 1.5 billion downloads in its first year less than three months after it passed the billion mark.
The Cupertino company said Tuesday it has 65,000 apps in the store, but plenty more on the way from the 100,000 developers in its iPhone Developer Program. The number of apps has jumped by 15,000 in the last month since Apple hosted a developer's conference in San Francisco.
"The App Store is like nothing the industry has ever seen before in both scale and quality," said CEO Steve Jobs. "With 1.5 billion apps downloaded, it is going to be very hard for others to catch up."
The biggest group of apps for the iPhone are games (about 10,600), entertainment (8,100) and books (about 7,700).
Apple also said Tuesday sold that it has sold more than 40 million iPhone and iPod Touches, including 1 million iPhone 3GSes on its first weekend last month.
