Gphone Vs iPhone: The verdict is out

The first phone to run on Google’s mobile operating system (OS), Android, – the G1, which is being offered by wireless service provider, T-Mobile – will be launched on October 22nd in the US. The reviews have now started coming in thick and fast.
According to Om Malik (www.gigaom.com) “G-1 is a Honda to iPhone’s BMW”. For a detailed head-to-head comparison between the G1 and iPhone, read Walt Mossberg’s post at walt.allthingsd.com. Another Web site, jkOnTheRun, has done a good stand-alone review of the G1.
Google's first phone smart, but needs work
Reviewers in the US have mostly compared it to the iPhone, which doesn't matter a lot in India, where the iPhone is too expensive (read Rs 30,000+). What will work for India is a handset that costs between Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000 and offers Android (HTC, are you listening?).
Google's G1 comes out
That apart, a significant point being made is that the G1 and iPhone will in fact cater to different people. The reason being that the G1 lacks the finesse iPhone brings to the table. So G1 is very functional while iPhone has style (ok, it's functional as well) – both in terms of the exterior and interior.

The OS that’s going to suffer the most due to Android will be Windows who recently announced that they would delay the launch of their next version of Windows Mobile (WinMo). Reviewers are already comparing the Android’s speed of operation to WinMo.
Of course, G1 is not the end, but the beginning of better products to come. Android is an open source software -- in plain lingo, this means that any one can tweak around with it and create something better. Some good manufacturer may even build a solid hardware product with enough oomph to take on iPhone. And when the two come together, iPhone might have something to worry about. Moreover, you can expect a lot more apps for a G-phone than an iPhone.

One advantage that any phone that runs on Google's Android will have is the brand name. G can definitely take on i. The race has just begun.
